How to Perform Rudrabhishekam at Home | Complete Shiva Abhishekam Procedure
“Rudrabhishekam is one of the most sacred and powerful forms of worship offered to Lord Shiva.” “In Sanatana tradition, Abhishekam is not merely a ritual of pouring water or offerings…” “It is a conscious act of surrender — where the devotee offers the mind, breath, and awareness at the feet of Shiva.” “The Shiva Lingam represents pure consciousness — beyond form, beyond name, beyond limitations.” “Through Abhishekam, we symbolically cleanse our inner impurities and invite balance, stillness, and grace into our lives.”
“This video is created to guide you through a simple, authentic, and scripturally aligned method of performing Rudrabhishekam at home.” “You do not need elaborate arrangements or complex procedures.” “What matters most is purity of intention, devotion, and awareness.” “Rudrabhishekam can be performed by anyone — householders, students, elders, or spiritual seekers.” “It is suitable for daily worship, Mondays, Pradosha, Maha Shivaratri, or whenever the heart feels drawn towards Shiva.”
“This is a basic home Rudrabhishekam — designed to be easy, safe, and spiritually effective for everyone.” “Mantras used in this pooja are simplified and chosen so that anyone can chant them with devotion.” “Let us now prepare ourselves and gather the required pooja items before beginning the ritual.”
Required Pooja Items – Rudrabhishekam At Home
“Before we begin Rudrabhishekam, let us gently prepare the sacred space and keep all pooja items ready.” “Please remember — Shiva does not seek luxury.” “Even simple offerings, when made with devotion and sincerity, are more than enough.”
“First, you will need a Shiva Lingam, made of stone, sphatik, or any natural material used for worship.”
“Place the Shiva Lingam in a large bowl or plate so that the Abhishekam water can flow freely.”
“Keep a small bowl or vessel to gently pour water during Abhishekam.”
“Fresh flowers may be kept for decoration.”
“If available, keep Bilva leaves, which are especially dear to Lord Shiva.”
“Keep Vibhuti (sacred ash) for offering.”
“A diya or oil lamp for lighting.”
“Dhoopam or incense sticks for fragrance.”
“Camphor for Aarati.”
“A bell, if available, may be kept near the altar.”
“Pure clean water for Abhishekam.”
“A Panchapatra and Uddharani for Achamanam and ritual purification.”
“For Naivedya, you may offer anything simple.”
“A small piece of jaggery, fruits, or cooked food prepared at home is sufficient.”
“Remember — Shiva accepts devotion, not quantity.”
“You may also keep a clean cloth or towel for wiping the Shiva Lingam after Abhishekam.”
“Sit on a wooden base, mat, or clean cloth during the pooja.”
“If any item is unavailable, do not feel discouraged.”
“Perform the pooja with whatever is possible for you — sincerity is the true offering.” “With the pooja items ready, let us now arrange the Shiva Lingam correctly and take our seat for worship.”
Placement Of Shiva Lingam & Seating Arrangement
“Before beginning the pooja, it is important to place the Shiva Lingam correctly and take a proper seated position.” “Place the Shiva Lingam inside the prepared bowl or plate meant for Abhishekam.” “Ensure that the Jaladhari, the water-flow part of the Shiva Lingam, is positioned facing North.” “This direction is traditionally followed as it allows the Abhishekam water to flow properly and maintains energetic balance.”
“Make sure the Shiva Lingam is stable and not tilted.” “Now, take your seat facing North, beside the Shiva Lingam.” “Sit on a wooden base, mat, or a clean cloth placed on the floor.”
“Keep the spine comfortably straight and sit in a relaxed posture.” “This posture helps maintain focus, stability, and calmness throughout the pooja.” “Take a moment to calm the breath.”
“Leave behind distractions and bring the awareness into the present moment.” “The outer preparation is now complete — we will now begin the inner purification.” “Let us now cleanse ourselves and the pooja items through purification mantras before starting the worship.”
Applying Vibhuti (Bhasma Dharana)
“Take a small pinch of Vibhuti in your left hand.” “Add a few drops of water and gently make a soft paste.” “Using three fingers, apply the Vibhuti on your forehead.”
“This represents the three aspects — creation, preservation, and dissolution — all merging into Shiva.”
“Now apply Gandha or sandalwood paste between the eyebrows.” “This is the Ajna Chakra — the center of awareness.” “With this, we align our body, mind, and intention for the worship.”
Purification – Self & Pooja Items
“Before beginning any sacred ritual, purification is essential.” “This step reminds us that purity is not only external, but also internal — of thought, intention, and awareness.”
Chant following mantra

“Sprinkle a few drops of water on yourself — on the head and hands.” “Then sprinkle water lightly over the pooja items.” “As this water touches everything, we invoke inner and outer purity.” “This mantra reminds us that whether one is pure or impure, remembrance of the Divine makes everything sacred.”

Rudrābhiṣekam – Beginning the Abhiṣekam
“Now begins the most sacred part of the pooja — Rudrābhiṣekam.” “Abhiṣekam is not merely pouring water.”
“It is an act of surrender — offering the ego, the mind, and the breath at the feet of Shiva.” About the mantra we chant here is sourced from sri rudram of taittireeya samhita and taken from skanda purana.
And Importantly this chanting is not mandatory and if any one feels difficulty in chanting and can use shiva sahasra namam during the abhisheka, or even only the chanting of Om namah shivaya throughout the abhishekam is enough. Or you can use our audio during the abhishekam.
And remember devotion in your heart is more important than the mantra, perform your abhishekam with devotion even if you don’t know any mantra.
Lets continue with abhishekam,
“First, take a small pinch of sacred Vibhūti.” “Gently apply it on the top of the Shiva Lingam with devotion.”
“The Jaladhāri of the Shiva Lingam represents the divine family of Lord Shiva.”
“First, pour a few drops of water on the front side of the Jaladhāri — the place of Lord Gaṇapati, remover of obstacles.”
“Next, pour a few drops on the back side of the Jaladhāri — the place of Lord Kārttikeya, symbol of courage and wisdom.”
“Then, offer water at the center of the Jaladhāri, representing Bālā Tripura Sundarī / Aśoka Sundarī, the divine feminine energy.”
“Finally, pour water gently around the entire Jaladhāri, symbolizing Mother Pārvatī, the source of compassion and strength.”
Now, slowly begin pouring water on the Shiva Lingam.” “Chant the following mantra continuously while pouring the water.” keep pouring water till the end of this chanting.
If someone wants to perform pancamrita abhishekam they can use milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar in place of water.
Start pouring water on shivalingam in small amounts
